A Disciple
A Disciple

WHAT IS A DISCIPLE?

A disciple is a follower of Jesus Christ. From the moment we surrender our life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, we begin our discipleship journey, seeking to live like Him, trust in Him and learn from Him. Because our identity as a disciple of Jesus is rooted in our believing in His life, death and resurrection, our activity will look and be different. Over time, through the power of the Holy Spirit, our lives will start to look more and more like Jesus’. This is our discipleship journey.

Our Mission
Our Mission

We exist to love God, love people, and make disciples of Jesus everywhere.

We love God by growing in our knowledge of Him and living in worshipful obedience to His Word.

We love people by imitating Christ and inviting the broken and suffering to receive hope and care.

We make disciples by proclaiming the powerful gospel message that Jesus Christ lived in perfect obedience to the Father, was crucified for our sin, was resurrected by the power of the Holy Spirit, ascended into heaven, and will one day return to make all things new.

THE CROSS

The good news of the gospel is the call of God and it expects all those who hear to respond to it. Jesus demands that we put Him above all else. Our allegiance and obedience to Him is to be above even what we give to our family. Jesus said in Matthew 10:37, “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”

And our allegiance and obedience to Him is to be above even regard for our own lives. As Jesus said in Mark 8:34, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”

LOVE GOD

Surrender: A disciple surrenders to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.  Jesus often got straight to the point. His call to discipleship in Mark 8:34 is no exception: “If anyone would come after me, let  him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Discipleship equals self-denial and cross-bearing. Christianity requires the submission of one’s individual will to the lordship of Christ.

Steward: A disciple stewards all that they have been given for the Kingdom of Heaven. We bring our first and our best, because He gave His first and His best. God gives us all good gifts (talent, financial, time) that we are to leverage for the Kingdom.  We are to be managers and not owners of our gifts.

LOVE PEOPLE
Serve: To know Jesus is to be served by Jesus and to know Jesus is to serve like Jesus (John 13:1-15). People who love God ask the question, “Who and where am I serving?” We show love to others when we serve them (Matthew 25:35-40 ). We find the strength to serve others for the sake of them seeing Jesus as we have by falling on our face and begging for his power to flow through us to serve each other.

Sharing: We love others by sharing our faith, the Gospel, our story, a cup of coffee. The New Testament clearly portrays Christian evangelism as verbal proclamation and summons. It’s news delivered as a persuasive plea, declaring the glory of Christ and calling sinners to repent.  The Apostle Paul says in Romans 10:17, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Only through the preaching of the gospel can faith come from hearing. And the faithful need to pray for ministers of the gospel to be sent into the world so the sinner can be raised to life in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.

MAKE DISCIPLES OF JESUS EVERYWHERE

Connect: You are not saved by the Church, but to a Church. Fifty-two times the Bible says, “one another”. Discipleship is a team sport, it cannot be done on its own. No one was meant to go through life alone. We need each other. We understand we are all on our own journey with God and that our faith is supposed to be personal, but it was never meant to be private. We believe that healthy, life-giving relationships are where real life-change happens and where our faith is worked out. We share our lives with each other through Disciple group communities because we all need a group of friends who can push us, comfort us, and encourage us (Hebrews 10:24-25 and Acts 2:42; 46). The church is more than coffee with friends—it’s a meaningful gathering of Christians that involves fellowship and growing in biblical truth.

Grow: There are two main ingredients needed for spiritual growth, mortification and vivification (2 Peter 1:1-11). Mortification is defined as putting our sin to death. As the Puritan John Owen once said, “Kill sin or sin will be killing you.” Sin is like an aggressive snake. If we don’t proactively attack sin, it will prove deadly. Thankfully, we aren’t alone in the fight. The power to kill sin comes from Christ through the Holy Spirit (Vivification). As we focus on snuffing out sin, we must also draw near to the throne of grace. It’s there we’ll find grace to help in our time of need (Heb. 4:16). Effort is necessary, but as Owen says, “Mortification of any sin must be by a supply of grace. Of our selves we cannot do it.” Our affections must be stirred for the things of the Father.
