Called to Be His Witnesses

In Romans, the apostle Paul spends time instructing the early church about the desperate need for evangelism so all can be saved. As Paul asks, “How, then, can they call on the One they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the One of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” (Romans 10:14). The message must be sent and delivered for it to be received, Paul writes — no matter the cost or risk.
Romans 10:13-15,17 says, “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? . . . So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. (Rom. 10:13–15, 17)
The chain of logic in Paul’s mind is straightforward:
- The only way to be saved is to call on Christ’s name.
- The only way to call on Christ’s name is to believe the gospel.
- The only way to believe the gospel is to hear the gospel.
- The only way to hear the gospel is to be told the gospel.
The reality of another means of salvation besides faith in “the word of Christ” is difficult to square with this passage. We must go and tell the good news of Jesus! How do you do this? It’s simple. Check out the resource links below to learn more.
